Do you know how far across the room you can shoot a miniature marshmallow ...
from your nose? Do you know how long it takes to remove 5 marbles from a bowl of
ice ... with your toes? The answers to these and other very interesting and
fascinating questions are answered each week at the Middle School and High
School Youth meetings!
Approximately 40 young people and their advisors meet on Sunday evenings for
dinner in the Fellowship Hall at 6:30. (Dinners are provided by our wonderful
parent volunteers).
At 7:15, they split into separate Middle and High School meetings for
discussion and activities. The High Schoolers, led by Rix Threadgill, have
been very busy so far this year with church activities, community service, and
fund raising. At the end of the summer, they were in charge of organizing a
shoebox campaign for residents of a local Buford nursing home. BPC church
members supplied personal items, candy, stationary, socks and other goodies to
go into the shoeboxes, which were delivered by the youth to the nursing home
residents.
The High Schoolers serve the church on a regular basis by ushering at the
11:00 worship service. They've also helped the Property Committee by spreading
pine straw. In addition, they assemble and decorate the Christmon tree for the
Advent season each year.
Fun activities have included a fall lock-in and an overnight trip to the
Floyd's horse farm in White County, where they were almost lost in a corn maze!
Their summer retreat this year will be to Montreat in North Carolina, and
successful fund raising activities have included preparing and serving the Fall
Festival dinner, and selling live Christmas trees and wreaths. One of the most
lucrative fundraisers is the annual BPC Yard Sale in the spring, so keep the
youth in mind as you do your spring cleaning!
The Middle Schoolers, led by Mary Susan Robertson, began the year by organizing
the games and activities for the BPC Fall Festival. This was followed by a Fall
Retreat to the Calvin Center, the Atlanta Presbytery's Retreat Center in
Hampton, Georgia. The theme for this year's retreat was "In the Middle of In
Between", and nineteen of our kids, along with four adults, enjoyed a weekend
with middle schoolers from several other churches in the metro Atlanta area.
The Middle Schoolers always enjoy lively, noisy Sunday evening meetings.
They've had discussions on turning worries over to God, and the different ways
that God speaks to us. One of the special activities of the fall was finishing
up their new room by writing their favorite Bible verses on the "verse" wall in
the Middle School room. They've also planned and presented a stewardship skit
for the congregation at both worship services during the Stewardship Campaign.
Both Middle and High Schoolers are active in all aspects of the church's
life. They volunteer in the Special Needs class during worship services; they
serve as acolytes, crucifers and servers; they are members of the Junior, Youth,
and Handchime Choirs; and they regularly volunteer in the nursery and Children's
Worship.
Service, learning, and fun ... they do it all, and with energy and
enthusiasm!
